The USS Reliant (NCC-1864-A) was a Miranda-class Federation starship in Starfleet service from the late-23rd century to mid-24th century. It was at least the second ship to bear the name, a direct replacement for its ill-fated predecessor. The Reliant was launched in the late 2280s, after the previous vessel's destruction in the Mutara Nebula in 2285. (TNG: "The Measure of a Man"; Ships of the Line 2012; Ships of the Line 2015)
During the 2320s, the Reliant was commanded by Captain Anton Manning. Lieutenant Mamoru Nakamura also served aboard the ship during the latter part of the decade. (TNG: "The Measure of a Man"; TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)
In 2327, Ensign Jean-Luc Picard was assigned to the Reliant as a helmsman, following his recovery from cardiac replacement surgery. It was his first deep space assignment since graduating Starfleet Academy. (TNG: "The Measure of a Man"; PIC: "Broken Pieces")
That year, the Reliant visited Vulcan, where Manning, Picard and other officers attended the betrothal ceremony of Ambassador Spock and Commander Saavik. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart; TNG: "Sarek"; The Lessons of Life)
The Reliant was decommissioned in 2363, a task overseen by then-Captain Picard while awaiting his assignment to the USS Enterprise-D. (Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty)
When the Borg made their incursion into Federation space in 2373, the Reliant was pressed back into service and participated in the Battle of Sector 001 as part of the fleet defending Earth. (Star Trek: First Contact)
Given the threat of the Dominion, Starfleet decided against returning the Reliant to mothballs. She was among a number of Miranda class vessels that underwent combat refits and served during the Dominion War. In 2374, Reliant participated in the First Battle of Chin'toka. (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets")
She remained in service until the early 25th century, when she was succeeded by the USS Reliant (NCC-90200), lead ship of a new Reliant class. The Reliant lineage would continue into the next millennium, with the USS Reliant-M in service during the 32nd century. (Star Trek Online; PIC: "The Star Gazer"; DSC: "Die Trying")
