The Streethians were a sentient, bipedal Cetacean species from the planet Streethia in the Shackleton Expanse. They achieved warp flight circa 2370, and made first contact with the United Federation of Planets two years later in 2372. By 2410, they had become Federation members. Appearance and Biology[]
Streethians evolved from an acquatic species, and resemble both Earth dolphins and bipedal mammalians. While air-breathers, they were able to hold their breath for several hours and could live quite comfortably underwater, though not at extreme depths.
Their skin was hairless and "rubbery" to the touch, and varied in tone from soft greys and whites to darker greys. The average Streethian was five feet tall, with facial features including two black eyes and two sensory nodes above the ear holes that resembled off-white membranes. Their facial structure was slightly elongated with slightly protruding mouths. Their hands and feet were tridactyl, with large digits, including an opposable thumb.
The biological sex of a Streethian could vary throughout their life, and they had no gender or gender roles, essentially a non-binary species. (SOT: "The Bishop's Opening")
History[]
The Streethians had a unified planetary society by the 2370s. While in many other aspects they were on par with 21st century Earth, Streethian technology blended the artificial with the natural, organic elements of their world, such as a coral-like substance from which much of their architecture was built, in ways which surpassed anything known to the Federation at that time. By that time, they also had a colony on Streethia's sole moon, a full-fledged city called Otono, named after a Streethian goddess.
Lieutenant Dorothy Baker, a Starfleet linguist assigned to Starbase 364 was part of the Federation team that made first contact with the Streethians. (SOT: "The Bishop's Opening")
In 2372, the Streethian's planetary leader was President Yanute. Several weeks after first contact, he met with Captain Rafael Martinez and the crew of the USS Sally Ride, who helped discover and repel an attempted Romulan exploitation of Streethia's resources. After the Romulans were driven off, Yanute and Martinez negotiated an information and technology exchange between the Streethians and the Federation before the Sally Ride returned to Starbase 364. While full diplomatic relations were delayed due to the Federation-Klingon War, the Sally Ride crew was able to upgrade the planetary satellite network to form a tachyon detection grid as an early warning system against further Romulan incursions.
