Stardust City

Stardust City in 2399

Stardust City was a large city and capital of the planet Freecloud. The local residents were called Dusties, or sometimes "hive dwellers" by other Freecs. The city was a frequent destination for off-worlders and had a long-standing reputation as a center of commerce, den of vice, haven for fugitives, and a hotbed of espionage, illicit dealings and intrigue. Founded circa 2180, Stardust City was located at the Perfume Strait on Panterra in Freecloud's southern hemisphere, where the Perfume Sea met the Panpotine Ocean. As of the 2390s, the metropolis had a population in excess of 20,000,000, not including transients and off-world residents, and spanned some 500 square kilometers. For most of the year, the city was cold, covered in snow and ice, except for the roughly 90-day "winter", when the climate became hot and humid, with frequent, strong monsoons.

The city was spread along the northern and southern shores of the Perfume Sea, the coastline north and south of the Strait, and up the slopes of the Bewlay Brothers, the two rock massifs which flanked the inlet. The city even extended itself into the inlet, on a series of natural islands and constructed platforms, including Bewlay Island. Frozen canals and ice-bridges connected the districts and coupled with the the bio-luminescent frost that sometimes covered the pink-stucco architecture to create a picturesque, wintry image of the city, which tourists found very appealing.

The heart of the metropolis was the district known as Old Stardust City, where the Grand Hotel and Casino Doradus was located. (Chabon: "Some Notes on Freecloud")

Starships approaching Freecloud were inundated with advertisements for various businesses, most of which were located in Stardust City.

By the late 2390s, Gabriel Hwang and his wife Pel lived in Stardust City. In 2399, Gabriel worked for Freebank. (PIC: "Stardust City Rag")

In 2399, Raffi Musiker traced Dr. Bruce Maddox to Freecloud. Jean-Luc Picard, Cristobal Rios and Seven of Nine visited the Nightbox club in Stardust City to retrieve Maddox from the criminal Bjayzl. The encounter ultimately led to Bjayzl's death, when she was vaporized by Seven in retribution for the murder of Icheb in 2386. (PIC: "The End is the Beginning", "Stardust City Rag")
