Star Trek Online (abbreviated STO) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released for PC in 2010. It was developed by Cryptic Studios. The game is initially set in 2409, thirty years after the film Star Trek Nemesis, and twenty-two years after the destruction of Romulus as depicted in the 2009 film Star Trek.
Though STO takes background material from the Litverse of Star Trek novels, the two timelines diverge before the events of Star Trek: Destiny. With the broadcast of Star Trek: Picard in 2020, much of STO's timeline is also divergent from the post-Nemesis canon of Star Trek, though revisions are underway, such as the removal of Icheb from the game, and the inclusion of Seven of Nine as she is depicted in Picard.
Until 2019, players of Star Trek Online were able to create user-generated content in the Foundry, consisting of their own characters and stories (or missions, in game terms), constituting a form of fan fiction for both STO and Star Trek in general.
Because the timeline of the game is compressed, and many missions and events happen simultaneously, Star Trek: Pendragon has devised its own "order of events" and dating scheme to cover the Online stories. That chronology is called The Path Beyond 2409.
