Sonya Gomez was a human female who served as an engineer in Starfleet during the latter half of the 24th century. (TNG: "Q Who", "Samaritan Snare"; Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers)
Born circa 2343, she graduated Starfleet Academy in 2365. Her first post as an ensign was aboard the USS Enterprise. She joined the Enterprise during its stop at Starbase 173 around stardate 42523.7 (11 July 2365). Originally assigned to gamma shift, Chief Engineer La Forge saw her potential and she was quickly promoted to alpha shift. (SCE novel: Many Slendors; TNG: "The Measure of a Man", "Q Who")
During her time on the Enterprise, Sonya was reunited with Lian T'su, a friend who had been a year ahead of her at the Academy. She also developed friendships with several crewmembers in particular, including Wesley Crusher and Kieran Duffy. She and Duffy had a year-long romance which lasted until after the quantum filament incident in 2368, when Gomez was promoted to full lieutenant and transferred to the USS Oberth. (SCE novel: Invincible, Many Splendors)
After a year aboard the Oberth, Gomez transferred to the USS Sentinel in 2369. By 2375, she held the rank of lieutenant commander and was chief engineer aboard the Sentinel when it was the only survivor of a raid on a Dominion outpost. Gomez saved her crew by altering the ship's warp field so it appeared to be a Cardassian freighter. (SCE novel: The Belly of the Beast, War Stories)
By 2381, Gomez held the rank of captain and was the commanding officer of the Obena-class USS Archimedes. (LDS: "First First Contact", "Grounded")
First Splinter timeline[]
In 2376, on stardate 53122.9 (14 February), Gomez, by then a full commander, was assigned to the USS da Vinci as first officer and leader of the ship's Starfleet Corps of Engineers team. She was reunited with Kieran Duffy, and the two rekindled their romance. After several months, Duffy even proposed marriage, but Gomez was hesitant. Before she could give her response, Duffy was killed at Galvan VI on stardate 53781.3 (12 October 2376). (SCE novel: The Belly of the Beast, Wildfire)'
After Captain David Gold's retirement in 2380, Gomez was promoted to captain herself and given command of the da Vinci, becoming one of the few officers to remain in the engineering division while commanding a starship. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
