Sigma Iotia II

The USS Enterprise orbits Sigma Iotia II, 2268

Sigma Iotia II was the second planet in the Sigma Iotia system. An M-class planet, it was the homeworld of the Iotians. Located in the Canopus Core of the Beta Quadrant, not far from the borders of both the Klingon and Romulan Star Empires, the planet was visited by the USS Horizon in the 2160s, which ultimately resulted in massive cultural contamination. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action"; Star Trek Encyclopedia)

After receiving the Horizon's final radio transmissions a century later, the USS Enterprise made the Federation's second visit to the planet in 2268 and discovered the contamination. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")

Subsequently, the planet became a Federation protectorate, and the Federation Council devoted significant resources to the planet, sending many sociologists and cultural experts to carefully guide the Iotians back onto a more natural and ethical development track. (FASA: The Federation; SCE novel: Fables of the Prime Directive)

Within a few years, this cultural exchange led to the Iotians sending representatives to the Federation Council in 2271, and engaging in interstellar trade by the 2280s. Still, some Iotians clung to the old ways of the gangsters, and the Iotian Outfit persisted as an underworld entity into the 24th century; other Iotians began to imitate the Starfleet personnel that visited their world. (TOS novel: The Lost Years, The Great Starship Race; Decipher: Worlds; The Worlds of the Federation)

Sigma Iotia II finally became a member of the United Federation of Planets in 2366. (SCE novel: Fables of the Prime Directive)

Jodd Pako and Makk Vinx were both born on Sigma Iotia II in the mid-24th century and served in Starfleet in the 2360s and 2370s. (NF short story: "All That Glisters..."; SCE novel: The Demon, Book 1)

Renova Exler was born on Sigma Iotia II around 2340, and grew up in the care of her grandfather. A small-time pickpocket in her youth, she attempted to steal from Starfleet officer, Sayzar Tyrellian. Tyrellian took her under his wing, and ensured her a place at Starfleet Academy. (Star Trek: Outpost)
