The Shackleton Expanse was a region of the Beta Quadrant, largely unexplored by the late 24th century, named after early 20th century Earth arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. It was located beyond the Canopus Core of Federation space, proximate to the Klingon and Romulan Star Empires. The expanse was home to gravitational eddies, spatial anomalies and numerous forms of stellar phenomena. (STA: Beta Quadrant Sourcebook, Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide)
Beginning in the 2370s, Starfleet began a series of survey missions to chart the Shackleton Expanse, based out of Starbase 364, a joint operation with the Klingons also known as Narendra Station. The USS Sally Ride was assigned to an exploration mission there in 2371, as was the USS Ross ten years later in 2381 (in a different quantum reality). (Shield of Tomorrow; Clear Skies)

Following the missions of the Sally Ride and the Ross, other Starfleet vessels were assigned to the Expanse, including the USS Chawla, in the 2410s. (Clear Skies: Perseverance)
System J-991, location of the planet Streethia, was in the expanse, approximately 12 light-years from Narendra Station. (SOT: "...A Guest In Your Own House")
The N'yo Star Cluster (and its eponymous sector) were located in the Shackleton Expanse, along with the planet Jataran, homeworld of the J'Shashians. (Clear Skies: "Negotiations", "New Civilizations", "The J'Shashia")
Cozmozoans and other-spaceborne life were common in the Expanse, part of an "intragalactic ecocosystem" that ranged all the way to the Carina Nebula more than 8,000 light years distant. (Clear Skies; TTN novel: Orion's Hounds)
