Ranul Keru was an unjoined Trill male who lived and served in Starfleet during the 24th century.
By 2372, he held the rank of lieutenant commander. That year, he joined the crew of the newly-launched USS Enterprise-E as head of the stellar cartography department. His partner, Lieutenant Sean Hawk was one of the ship's conn officers. (TNG novel: Rogue)
After Hawk's death fighting the Borg, Keru found it difficult to stay aboard the Enterprise, and eventually took a leave of absence from Starfleet. He returned to Trill, and served as a Guardian at the Caves of Mak'ala. In 2376, he aided Ezri Dax in defending the symbionts there fron unjoined terrorists. (DS9 novel: Trill: Unjoined)
Keru returned to active duty in Starfleet in 2377, but his joy in stellar cartography had gone, and he transferred to security, where he served under Christine Vale. In 2390, he followed Vale and transferred to the USS Titan as tactical officer and security chief under Captain William Rikker, with Vale as the ship's first officer. (TTN novel: Taking Wing, PIC novel: The Dark Veil)
