A Ranger-class starship
The Ranger class was type of Federation starship, an explorer in Starfleet service during the 23rd century. The class was in operation from 2215 to 2270, though several ships remained active into the 2290s. (Decipher: Starfleet Operations Manual; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
Ranger-class vessels had 14 decks, and a standard crew compliment of 287. They had one shuttlebay, and three shuttlecraft standard.
During its earliest years, the Ranger class was Starfleet's main frontline starship, and its mission profiles ranged from exploration and first contact to top secret missions into Klingon space. By the 2240s, however, it had been superseded by the newer Constitution-class starships. (Decipher: Starfleet Operations Manual)
