Progenitor species are lifeforms that are the evolutionary or biological ancestors of one or more later lifeforms. In the history of humanoid life in the Milky Way, there have been several significant progenitor species, among them the Arretians, the First Ones, the Ancient Progenitors, and possibly the Preservers.
