The Pollarians were a humanoid species from the Class M moon Pollar in the Tullus sector of the Beta Quadrant. Though within the territory of the Romulan Star Empire and close to the borders of the Taurhai Unity, they had not been discovered by either the Romulans or Taurhai as of the mid-2370s. However, they had made first contact with the Breen circa 2369, and established a trade alliance with them.
Having evolved on a dense, tropical, yet dim world, Pollarians were small in stature, with large black eyes, overdeveloped ears, pale skin and no body hair. Their eyesight was extremely sensitive, extending partially into the infrared portion of the spectrum. Bright visible light was extremely painful to them. Their hearing was likewise quite sensitive, leading the Pollarians to speak quietly by most humanoid standards.
Pollarians were highly curious and mercantile. Their society was feudal in nature, with several large nation-states, most notably the Langell Commonwealth, and numerous smaller city-state equivalents. Technologically, they were in an industrial age as of the mid-24th century, and acquired some more advanced technology through contact with the Breen, which enhanced the already rapid exploitation of their world's natural resources. Pollarians measured success and happiness by an individual's wealth and material possessions. Feudal families were often owners of great wealth, but by the 2370s mercantilism had begun to redistribute some wealth to the middle class, who began to look to the stars for opportunity bought by the Breen and their trading partners.
