The Odysseus class was a type of Federation starship that entered service circa 2280. The class was a test-bed for experimental developments in warp drive, running parallel to "The Great Experiment" with transwarp of the original USS Excelsior.
The Odysseus class featured curved warp nacelles, which lent the ship a more "boxy" appearance than other contemporary designs like the Excelsior class and Columbia class. However, the new nacelle and engine designs did not provide any significant advantage, and the class design was abandoned by the end of the 2280s. Eight vessels of the class were constructed, but by 2311 only two were left in service, one of which was the USS Agamemnon. (Star Trek: The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)
