The New Orleans class was a type of Federation starship in Starfleet service during the 24th century. Classed as a frigate, the New Orleans was Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards' next major project after the Ambassador class. It became one of the pathfinders for technology used in the Galaxy class development project, serving a similar role to that the Baton Rouge class had in the development of Constitution-class technology. The USS New Orleans and her earliest sister ships were built in the late 2220s. The USS Kyushu, one of the first of the class to be launched, was commissioned in 2327. (The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard)
After those first vessels passed their trials with flying colors, the class went into full production in the 2330s, quickly becoming one of Starfleet's most reliable "workhorses," seen as a replacement for the still-useful but aging Miranda class. Sturdy and versatile, the New Orleans class' expected service duration was at least 80 years, and the class would see several major upgrades and refits over its operational lifetime, remaining in production well into the 2370s, at least. The first major upgrade to the New Orleans came in 2359, and the resulting Mark II design kept the class on par with the brand new Galaxy and Nebula classes just being launched from Utopia Planitia and was viewed as part of the same design family. The second major refit was originally scheduled for 2379, but was moved up to 2374 because of the Dominion War. By the 2410s, starship technologies had advanced so significantly that the planned (and final) Mark V refit for the New Orleans was instead spun off into its own project, the Lafayette class. (Star Trek Online)
