The Letheans were a telepathic humanoid species, whose homeworld was somewhere in the Ionite Nebula. In the 24th century, they were often employed by criminal organizations and as assassins and mercenaries.
They were proficient with telepathic attacks, which often proved fatal. These generally required close proximity, when the Lethean would place their hands near (not necessarily on) either side of their victim's head, emitting psionic energy that took the form of arcing electricity from their fingers. Some Letheans possessed telekinetic abilities as well.
Physically, Letheans were characterized by ridged heads, with bony spikes protruding from their faces and hands; their skin was mottled with tones ranging from sallow and gray to reddish brown. (DS9: "Distant Voices", "The Sword of Kahless"; LUG: Deep Space Nine Core Book; Star Trek Online)
During the mid-to-late 21st century, the Letheans waged war on the Gretharans, a proto-humanoid race of artisans, wiping them out. Writings left on Icaria Prime described a weapon, the Krialta, that the Gretharans had hoped would drive away the Letheans. (SCE novel: Remembrance of Things Past)
Many Letheans were members of the Orion Syndicate. In the 2390s, the Gorn Hegemony hired Lethean and Nausicaan mercenaries to aid in their war with the Klingon Empire. After the war, the Letheans offered their services to the Empire, and by 2409, many served in the Klingon Defense Force, while those who did not were often relegated to living in slums on Qo'noS and other Klingon worlds.
