Star Trek: Pendragon Wiki

Kevin Thomas Riley was a human male who served in Starfleet during the 23rd century. In the mid-2260s, he was a navigator aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). He later served as an aide to Admiral James T. Kirk at Starfleet Command, and subsequently became a Federation ambassador. (TOS: "The Naked Time", "The Conscience of the King")

Early life[]

Reilly was born in Ireland on Earth, circa 2240. Shortly thereafter, his family relocated to the Tarsus IV colony.

In 2246, Reilly's parents were among those killed in the Tarsus IV massacre on the orders of then-Governor Kodos. Reilly himself, only about six years old, was hidden and saved from death by young Jimmy Kirk. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")

Afterwards, Reilly was raised by relatives on Earth, growing up in Van Nuys, California, where he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America (Wolf Pack 11340). (TOS novel: The Galactic Whirlpool)

He entered Starfleet Academy in 2258, graduating in 2262, and was assigned to the USS Exeter. After serving on the Exeter with distinction for three years, he received promotion to lieutenant and was assigned to the USS Enterprise upon her return from Delta Vega in 2265. (Star Trek: Starship Creator)

He made many friendships aboard the Enterprise, including with chief helmsman Hikaru Sulu, as well as Joe Tormolen, who was killed in the Psi 2000 incident in 2266. (TOS: "The Naked Time")

In 2267, Riley led an away team to an uncharted planet on which Crewman Lana Shembry was killed. Riley blamed himself for her death, and applied for transfer off the Enterprise. Captain Kirk reluctantly accepted, and Riley left the ship, roughly halfway through the vessel's five-year mission. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)

After the Enterprise[]

Lieutenant Riley became an instructor of navigation at Starfleet Academy. The post left him feeling unfulfilled, but he wanted to be where no lives depended on him. In 2268, he met and fell in love with fellow Starfleet officer Anab Saed. In 2270, the two took out a one-year marriage contract.

When Captain Kirk was promoted to admiral and became Chief of Starfleet Operations, he requested that Riley be promoted to lieutenant commander and reassigned to serve as his chief of staff at Starfleet Headquarters.

When their marriage contract expired, Anab took space duty aboard the USS Starhawk. Having realized that Riley's guilt was holding both of them back, she encouraged him to examine his life and find what he truly wanted. Riley attempted to resign his commission, but was talked out of it by Admiral Lori Ciana, and he remained as Kirk's chief of staff until Kirk's own return to the Enterprise during the V'Ger incident. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)

Riley eventually transferred to the diplomatic corps and served as an aide to Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan. In 2287, he became an ambassador in his own right, representing the Federation during talks with the Romulan Star Empire while Sarek was indisposed. He continued to serve as an ambassador for many years. (TOS novel: Probe; Foul Deeds Will Rise)

In 2293, Riley attended the memorial service for Captain Kirk at Starfleet Academy, along with many former Enterprise shipmates. (TOS novel: The Fire and the Rose)

Riley had at least one child, a son named Terrance Riley, born in 2310, who eventually became a Starfleet captain and commanding officer of the USS Intrepid during the 2370s. (TNG novel: Crossover)
