Star Trek: Pendragon Wiki

The K'Kmarak class was a type of Federation research vessel in use by Starfleet during the late 23rd century, first launched in the 2260s. Vessels of this class were named after historically significant Vulcan scientists, such as the lead ship's namesake. (FASA: Stardate Magazine vol 1, Issue 2)

The class was designed to fulfill exploration, scientific and research missions in the far reaches of Federation space, especially long duration expeditions to the galactic rim. They possessed the most extensive laboratory facilities of any contemporary Starfleet vessels. They were capable of performing in-depth planetary surveys, as well as observation of novae and other stellar phenomena.

By the mid-2280s, at least 14 K'Kmarak class vessels had been constructed, 8 in the "Mark I" configuration, followed by 6 "Mark III" ships. During their service period, ships of this class were instrumental in making first contact with several previously unknown species. (FASA: Stardate Magazine vol 1, Issue 2)

During their initial period of service (at least into the early 24th century), all ships of the class were crewed exclusively by Vulcans, and operated jointly between Starfleet, the Vulcan Science Council, and the Vulcan Expeditionary Group.
