Joseph Yates-Sisko, who preferred to go by simply Joseph Yates, is the son of Captains Kasidy Yates of the SS Xhosa, and Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space 9, Emissary of the Prophets. Named for his paternal grandfather, he was born in 2376, about six months after his father disappeared into the Celestial Temple. (DS9 documentary: What We Left Behind)
As a child, he was close with his half-brother Jake Sisko, though a rift eventually grew between them.

By 2395, Yates had joined Starfleet, and was serving on Deep Space 9 as a science officer. Starfleet's presence on the station had been reduced over the years, as Bajor had more fully taken over operation of DS9, and he was one of only a few Starfleet personnel assigned there; another was his friend, Molly O'Brien.
