The Iconians were an ancient and powerful race known in legend as "demons of air and darkness." They disappeared from the galaxy some 200,000 years before the 24th cetury, after their homeworld, Iconia underwent orbital bombardment. Having visited every corner of the Milky Way, they left numerous ruins behind, including some functioning technology, such as their gateways.
The worlds of Dewa, Dinasia and Iccobar were among those whose cultural and linguistic development were influenced by the Iconians, though they too had gone extinct by the 2360s.
Starfleet Captain Donald Varley was one of many individuals who made the study of the Iconians their lives' work. (TNG: "Contagion")
