The Groumall class was a type of starship used by the Cardassian Union beginning in the mid-24th century. The primary role of the class was as a freighter, but its modular design also allowed it to serve as a transport for ground troops. (DS9: "Return to Grace", et. al)
The Groumall class was developed during the height of the Bajoran Occupation, as a replacement for the outdated and inadequate vessels like Bok'nor-class, and entered service circa 2351. (Decipher: Starships)
During the Dominion War, some ships of this class were upgraded, and outfitted with spiral-wave disruptors, replacing their original, antiquated phasers. This upgraded version was known as the Salgar class. (LUG: Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 2: Starships of the Cardassian Union)
After the war, many Groumall-class vessels were sold to third parties as military surplus, and from the mid-2370s on, it was not uncommon to see them operated by independent pilots, or as part of the planetary fleets of non-aligned worlds. (Walkabout)
During that era, Brian Mallory worked on at least three separate Groumall-class freighters as a pilot, including the SS Walkabout and SS Warden. (Walkabout)
By the early 25th century, the design had been copied, and was being sold commercially by both Cardassian and Ferengi manufacturers as the Tuffli class, which came in standard, long or short configurations. Among those vessels were the SS Azura and her successor, the SS Azura II. (Star Trek Online)
