Gormaganders were a type of space-dwelling cosmozoan lifeform, one of several different types of beings commonly referred to colloquially as space whales. They were extremophiles and nucleovores that fed on alpha particles in solar winds. They typically lived in pods, and when they became separated from their podmates, they would often become so focused on the act of feeding that they would ignore all other instincts.
They were also the object of hunting by various species, for various purposes. Klingons and Orions were known to favor their meat. By the 23rd century, they were protected under the Federation's Endangered Species Act, and remained so for at least the next 900 years. - The species was named for Jörmungandr, the world-encircling serpent from Norse mythology.
