Gallifrey was an ancient world in a binary star system in the constellation of Kasterborus, near the center of the Milky Way galaxy, some twenty-nine thousand light-years from Earth. It was one of the earliest worlds where humanoid life arose after being seeded by the Ancient Progenitors. In the Doctor's universe, the planet's inhabitants would be known as Gallifreyans or Shobogans, and would give rise to the civilization of the Time Lords. It was a focal point of history and alternate timelines. (Doctor Who; Star Trek: Pendragon)
The planet possessed two moons and possibly a ring system. From orbit, it appeared to be an orange and brown world, with small patches of green, and greyish clouds. Its sky was orange, and the grass was red and purple, while some of the planet's trees bore silver leaves, which reflected the light of the twin suns and appeared to set the forests ablaze every morning. The planet had a much dryer climate than Earth; the northern hemisphere was dominated by reddish, rust-colored deserts and golden plains, while the southern continent was mountainous and wintery. The polar regions were ice-capped, and the planet's few rivers and lakes often appeared brown. (Doctor Who)
In the prime reality, Gallifrey was believed to have been destroyed when one of its suns went supernova around 140,000 years ago, possibly as a result of the Temporal Cold War, though that tale may be nothing more than legend. The Aegis were theorized to be a counterpart or successor to the Time Lords, and may have terraformed their planet into a replica of Gallifrey. (Star Trek: Pendragon)
By the early 25th century, at least one Starfleet vessel, the Ross-class USS Gallifrey, was named for this planet. (Star Trek: Pendragon; Star Trek Online)
