Fontana Station was a Tranquility-class Federation starbase in orbit of the planet Babel, in service during the late 23rd century.
Construction began on the station in 2274, when it was deemed the habitat dome on Babel itself was too outdated and no longer sufficient to host diplomatic conferences. The Starfleet Corps of Engineers soon began construction of a small starbase in orbit, and Fontana Station was completed in 2286, officially commissioned on stardate 8047.5. It was named after and dedicated to the memory of United Earth Ambassador Dorothy C. Fontana, who first proposed a conference at Babel in 2154, and would go on to help write the Federation Charter. The station's motto was a quote from Albert Camus: "Peace is the only battle worth waging."
At the time of its commissioning, Fontana Station had state-of-the-art diplomatic facilities and other amenities, which included 32 conference rooms of various sizes; extensive shuttlebays and large-scale transporters; and multiple independent environmental systems for many different species. The starbase could host at least 250 diplomatic guests at a time. Its operations center was on Deck 03. (Fontana Station by Tadeo D'Oria)
A painting of the station hung in Captain Jean-Luc Picard's quarters during his command of the USS Enterprise-D from 2363 to 2371. (TNG: "Sarek", "Attached", et. al)

Background[]
- The concept and background for Fontana Station was devised by digital artist Tadeo D'Oria, who conceived it in tribute to D.C. Fontana after her passing in 2019. He based it on Rick Sternbach's space station painting which had hung in Captain Picard's quarters through all seven seasons of TNG, and associated it with Babel because it matched the description of the planet and its moons in Star Trek Maps.
