The First Splinter was an alternate timeline that diverged from the prime reality in late 2373. It was created when the Borg attempted to remove the USS Enterprise-E from existence during the vessel's return home from protecting first contact in 2063. Though the Borg weapon did not have any noticeable effect on the ship or its crew, the resulting temporal incursion "fractured" the space-time continuum and produced an unstable alternate timeline.
At its point of divergence, the First Splinter was identical to the Prime reality, however each subsequent use of time travel or other temporal event created more "splinters", as the timelines further diverged. What were at first relatively minor differences centered around the United Federation of Planets and its neighbors quickly compounded and within a few years major events effecting the entire galaxy were evident. The Borg invasion of 2381 was a pivotal event in the First Splinter timeline, resulting in the deaths of billions, and a massively altered geopolitical landscape across the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. That same year in the prime reality, the Federation learned of the imminent supernova that would destroy the Romulan star and launched a massive rescue mission led by Jean-Luc Picard; whereas in the First Splinter, the Hobus supernova went undetected until 2387.
