Earth (also known as Sol III or Terra) was the Class-M third planet planet of the Sol system, on the border of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy. It was the homeworld of several sentient species, most notably Humans, and was the capital of the United Federation of Planets and original location of Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy. As the Federation's capital and one of its core worlds, Earth played a major role in galactic events for at least a millennium, from the 22nd century to the 32nd century and beyond. Its strategic importance sometimes made it a target for adversaries such as the Romulan Star Empire, the Dominion and the Borg.
Earth's first warp flight took place in 2063, after the planet's Third World War. That event led to first contact between humans and Vulcans, and ushered in an era of hope and renewal for the ravaged planet. (Star Trek: First Contact; ENT: "Broken Bow")
Earth had one moon, called Luna. By the 22nd century, a number of orbital facilities and habitats were also in place.
