The Draconis Outback was a region of space in the Alpha Quadrant, past the coreward borders of the United Federation of Planets and the Ferengi Alliance, not far from the territory of the Tzenkethi Coalition, and near the sectors the Ferengi referred to as the Hinterlands.
In the 2370s, the Outback was very much a frontier. Not under the control of any of the major powers, the region was sparsely populated by colonists, researchers or prospectors. However, free traders, merchants and smugglers were able to make a good living there, supplying goods and sometimes-illicit "services" to the scattered settlements and outposts.
Reports of the time called it "a rough and tumble place where more than one wanted man has decided to hide out, and where even peaceful folk tend to keep their phasers close at hand." (LUG: DS9 Core Book)
The Altanis Idrilon system was located in the Draconis Outback, along with the space stations known as Gateway and Gorkon's Retreat. (LUG: Raiders, Renegades & Rogues)
