Deep Space 5 was an Federation outpost active from the mid-23rd century into the 25th century. During the 2370s and 2380s, DS5 one of the Federation's main shipyards focused on new starship development. Near the Typhon sector and Sector 221-G, the station was proximate to the Ivor system and the Romulan Neutral Zone, and was one of the closest Starfleet outposts to the Typhon Expanse. (TNG: "Parallels"; Star Trek: First Contact; PIC: "Disengage"; Star Trek: Star Charts; TOS novel: Crisis of Consciousness)
Beginning in the 2360s, part of DS5's remit was to monitor the so-called "Borg vector" for any signs of activity. (LUG: DS9 Core Book; Star Trek: Pendragon)
Over the station's long service, DS5 was upgraded and augmented numerous times. Eventually, the original superstructure was replaced with an Invictus-class station, active by 2370.
As of that year, Deep Space 5 was one of several Federation facilities responsible for new starship development. (TNG: "Parallels")
In 2373, DS5 detected the annihilation of the Ivor Prime colony and informed Starfleet Command of the Borg incursion. (Star Trek: First Contact)
Later that year, Deep Space 5 temporarily housed several thousand Thallonians and other refugees from Sector 221-G, following the collapse of the Thallonian Empire. The USS Enterprise-E brought Ambassador Spock to the station for a diplomatic summit to deal with the crisis, which was also attended by Admirals Edward Jellico and Alynna Nechayev along with Ryjaan of the Danteri Empire and Prince Si Cwan of the Thallonians.
Following repairs after the Battle of Sector 001, the USS Excalibur departed DS5 to provide humanitarian aid in Sector 221-G. (NF novel: House of Cards)
In November, 2381, Deep Space 5 detected an anomaly in the Typhon Expanse. Further study indicated that it might be a stable wormhole. The USS Raleigh was dispatched to investigate, and contact was lost with the vessel. Two weeks later, the USS Solstice arrived at DS5 before proceeding into the Typhon Expanse to search for the Raleigh. (Star Trek Adventures: The Lost Frontier: "Episode 1", "Episode 3: Ashore")
One of the primary crew lounges aboard Deep Space 5 was called the White Stars. In the early 2380s, it was run by an Arkenite, Babish Wiggles. (Star Trek Adventures: The Lost Frontier: "Episode 3: Ashore")

Background[]
- The station was only seen on a computer display in TNG: "Parallels", which showed a Regula I-type station. Given its role as a starship production facility, and the ability to support thousands of refugees (which put it at max capacity), it is assumed that DS5 was one of the large Invictus-class starbases in service during the 2360s.
- As its appearance in Crisis of Consciousness isn't described, but the novel predates the Regula I type station's service period by almost a decade, it is assumed that DS5 was originally a different design, possibly a K-class station, which was expanded and upgraded over time, and eventually replaced with the larger facility.
