The Cygnus Reach was an expansive region of space in the deep Alpha Quadrant beyond Deneb, described by Jean-Luc Picard in 2364 at "the great unexplored mass of the galaxy." At that time, Starfleet planned to explore the area based out of Farpoint Station at Deneb IV. After the loss of the station, and with subsequent shifts in galactic politics, those plans were put on indefinite hold. In the early 2380s, Starfleet revived the Cygnus exploration initiative, and an expeditionary group was formed, which included the Galaxy-class USS Sojourner, two Insignia-class starships, several Luna-class vessels and at least one Phalanx-class ship. - The region was named by author Christopher L. Bennett, following the nomenclature established by the Taurus Reach of the Star Trek: Vanguard novel series.
