Star Trek: Pendragon Wiki

The Constellation class was a type of Federation star cruiser in Starfleet service during the 23rd and 24th centuries. Designed for long-term independent operations, ships of this class would carry out much of Starfleet's deep-space exploration in their first eighty years of service, before being relegated to utility and support duties in the 2360s. (TNG: "The Battle", "Peak Performance"; DS9: "The Abandoned", "Waltz")

Design[]

The Constellation class built on the successes of the Constitution- and Miranda-class refits, though with a "revolutionary" 4-nacelled design that echoed the earlier Nimitz and Nelson classes. The nacelles themselves were modified LWD models, aligned in pairs above and below the ship's hull.

Service history[]

The class prototype, USS Constellation (NX-1974) was launched circa 2275. She was soon followed by the USS Sempach and several other vessels. Full production on the class would not begin until the 2280s, after nearly a decade of evaluation. The second block of Constellations was launched beginning in 2284, with more ships ordered after the "failure" of the transwarp experiment in 2285 and the resulting delay in production of the Excelsior class.

In the early 2290s, the Constellation prototype returned to dock for refit and upgrades. She underwent certification trials in sector 23006 at the time of the Khitomer Conference in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Arguably the most famous ship of the class was the USS Stargazer, commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard from 2333 to 2355, and lost in the Battle of Maxia. (TNG: "The Battle", et. al)

In the 2330s, production on Constellation-class vessels slowed (but did not stop), thanks to the success of the Ambassador class class and other new designs. By 2364, however, the Constellations were considered "old and outdated," relegated to transport and utility roles, and were on the verge of being phased out entirely. Emergencies throughout the next decade pushed their retirement off until the 2380s.
