The Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet (abbreviated C-in-C or CNC) was the highest post within the Federation Starfleet, and was held by the senior-most Fleet Admiral (or "Grand Admiral"). The C-in-C held complete operational authority over Starfleet, and reported directly to the President of the United Federation of Planets, the C-in-C's only superior, as well as the Federation Council. - The title has also been used interchangeably (and incorrectly) with Commander, Starfleet (or "head of Starfleet Command") and occasionally, Starfleet Chief of Staff, though both are actually independent positions subordinate to the C-in-C.
