Centaurus V (colloquially known simply as Centaurus) was a Class M world, and the fifth planet in the Alpha Centauri system. An early Earth colony, as a member of the Centauri Concord, it became one of the founding members of the United Federation of Planets in 2161. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)
New Athens was the capital city, and in the mid-23rd century, the New Athens Spaceport was considered one of the best such facilities within the Federation. The Athena Preserve was a government park just outside New Athens. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)
As a child, Joanna McCoy lived on Centaurus with her aunt and uncle, while her father, Dr. Leonard McCoy served on Starbase 7. In 2269, she was a first-year student at the New Athens Medical Complex. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)
In 2255, James T. Kirk visited the McCoys on Centaurus. During that trip, Kirk "fell in love" with the beauty of a particular valley on the northern continent about 1000 kilometers west of New Athens. Finding out that the land was unclaimed, he set up a non-profit entity called Starstruck Incorporated and bought a 2000 hectare parcel, eventually naming it Garrovick Valley after his lost commanding officer aboard the USS Farragut. Using a large portion of his Starfleet pay, within 12 years, Kirk owned the entire valley and the banks of the Farragut River all the way back to the source, some thirty kilometers north, along with everything for another thirty kilometers downstream. He made sure he owned all the exploitation rights for the land and its resources as well, ensuring that no one could touch his property or the river that flowed through it. He eventually built a log cabin at his original landing spot. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus; Star Trek Generations)
In 2269, New Athens Spaceport, and the surrounding eight kilometers, were destroyed in an antimatter explosion set off by the terrorist Holtzman. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)
- The novel Crisis on Centaurus states that Centaurus was the fourth planet orbiting Alpha Centauri A, which would conflict with other depictions of Alpha Centauri IV. Other sources indicate "Centaurus V" was a major human colony in the system, so Pendragon has retconned Centaurus to be the fifth planet.
