The Carina system was a star system in the Beta Quadrant of the Milky Way, located near the Federation-Romulan border. It contained at least ten planets, only one of which, Carina VII, was Class M. The inner six planets were within the star's hot zone, either molten or barren rocks, while the outer worlds were gas giants, including the system's largest body, Carina X. Farther out, were a number of small, icy planetoids.
In 2265, the USS Hamilton was lost in the Carina system while conducting clandestine tests of a tachyon weapon system. Starfleet classified the incident. Years later, after the Genesis Project debacle, Starfleet Intelligence believed it best to obscure all knowledge of previous failed weapons experiments, and created false records showing the Hamilton had been decommissioned and scrapped instead of lost.
By the 2360s, the Federation had established a colony on Carina VII.
