Braidans were humans from the Federation colony of Braida. Forced to survive on a hostile and irradiated planet without outside help for nearly a century, Braidans created biomechanical implants which allowed them to adapt their biochemistry.
Though often seen as similar to Borg, that was a misunderstanding based on fear and ignorance. Braidans were unable to assimilate others, create nanites or interface with every computer they came across. Braidans never formed a collective, nor took any step that would lessen individuality.
Braidans were rarely encountered away from their homeworld, though a few serve in Starfleet, including Dr. Mordan Ness.
