The Borderland was a region of space several light-years wide between the Klingon Empire and the areas dominated by the Orion Syndicate in the mid-22nd century. It was home to many Orion Colonies, as well as rogues and renegades from both powers, and was known for being dangerous, lawless and unpredictable.
The Verex system was within the Borderland, and Verex III was the site of an Orion slave processing outpost. Arik Soong visited the Borderland in the 2130s, where he made contact with the Orions and established trade relations with them to acquire goods and equipment for himself and his Augments in their exile.
In 2154, Soong's Augments seized a Klingon bird-of-prey in the Borderland, and the Earth Starfleet vessel Enterprise was ventured into the Borderland after them on 17 May of that year. After being attacked by two Orion interceptors, Enterprise followed them to Vertex III and rescued their kidnapped crew from the Syndicate's slave market there. (ENT: "Borderland")
Over the next century, the Borderland shrunk as the bounds of both the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets shifted and grew. A sizeable chunk of the region remained under Syndicate control, as the Orion Neutrality Act solidified their sphere of influence after the Four Years War, and then the Organian Peace Treaty established the Klingon Neutral Zone in 2267.
