Betelgeuse was a star and associated planetary system in the Beta Quadrant of the Milky Way, approximately 430 light years from Earth, where it was visible in the constellation of Orion. There were at least 13 planets in the star system, three of which were Class M. Betelgeuse was believed to be the original home of the Betelgeusian species from Betelgeuse II. Many hundreds of years prior to the 23rd century, the Betelgeusians learned that their sun would soon enter an expansion phase, rendering Betelgeuse II and IV uninhabitable, and the species began an exodus from their homeworlds. (TOS novel: Ex Machina, The Face of the Unknown)
At some point after the Betelgeusians had left the system, the Orions settled on Betelgeuse XIII. By the 23rd century, it was a major Orion population center, known for a "cheerfully decadent" lifestyle and a thriving criminal element. (LUG: Star Trek: The Original Series Core Game Book)
