Alta Vista III was planet in the Alta Vista system. In the 24th century, a small Federation research outpost, Gamow Station, was located there.
The planet's atmosphere had much higher concentrations of sulfur, and lower concentrations of oxygen than humans could survive in, though its native plant and animal life thrived in such an environment. The planet's clouds were a spectacular shade of green, resulting from from fine, airborne colonies of alta mist, an algae-like single-cell plant unique to that world.
In 2372, the planet received fourteen hundred refugees from worlds that had become infected with an unknown virogen. The refugees were housed at Gamow Station, which struggled to accommodate them. Despite quarantine procedures, the virogen spread to Alta Vista's own biosphere, devastating the planet.
The following year, Gamow Station was destroyed by the Symmetrists, killing its entire crew and all fourteen hundred refugees, in order to cover up their involvement in creating the virogen.
Once a cure was synthesized, Alta Vista III and the other infected worlds were purged of the virogen and the process of regrowth began. (ST novel: Avenger)
