- For other uses, see Alpha Centauri (disambiguation).
The Alpha Centauri system was a ternary star system located in the Beta Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy, approximately four light-years from Sol. The stars Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B were closely linked, while the smaller Alpha Centauri C (Proxima) held a distant orbit. At least thirteen planets orbited the main star, while the secondary had a system of at least nine, with multiple planets orbiting both.
The system held several M class planets, and was the home of two native humanoid species, the Centaurans of Alpha Centauri IV and the Centaurians of Centauri VII, along with multiple Earth colonies established in the early days of human interstellar travel. The worlds formed the Alpha Centauri Concordium of Planets, an interplanetary alliance which became one of the founding members of the United Federation of Planets.
The astronomical unlikelihood of so many life-sustaining bodies existing within such an environment, as well as the genetic similarity between the native Centaurii and humans, led to much research and theorizing over the system's origins, and the notion that it might have been artificially engineered. (Star Trek: Pendragon)
Circa 2365, Alpha Centauri supported a system-wide population of 21 billion, which was at the time said to be "second only to the Sol system," at least among the core worlds. The Beta Rigel system, as well as the planet Arcturia were known to be even more heavily-populated. (The Worlds of the Federation; Star Trek: Pendragon)

Notes[]
- Many contradictory interpretations of Alpha Centauri and its worlds exist within the history of Star Trek, not the least of which is whether there are indigenous species or not. Where possible, the writers of Star Trek: Pendragon have attempted to retcon these diverse sources into a cohesive whole, while maintaining the spirit of the original intent. Inevitably, some material is irreconcilable, and has either been ignored, or left intentionally vague.
- One notable exclusion is the portrayal of Alpha Centauri B in A.C. Crispin's novel Time for Yesterday - due to the incompatibility with other sources before and after, that has been retconned to Quindar, another star system in the Centaurus constellation.
- Further information about the implemented retcons is available on individual planetary articles.
