The following events occurred in the year 2391 according to the Earth calendar and corresponds to the stardate period 68000 to 68999.

Events[]

  • In or about this year, Thad Riker is diagnosed with mendaxic neurosclerosis. The condition would be curable with access to an active positronic matrix, but due to the Federation's ban on synthetic life, none exist. Thad's parents begin searching for alternative treatments. (PIC: "Nepenthe")
  • Eventually Captain William Riker puts his Starfleet commission on active reserve, and takes up residence on the planet Nepenthe with his family, in the hopes that the regenerative properties of the planet may cure Thad's condition. (PIC: "Nepenthe")
Riker and Troi may not have left the fleet immediately, but it would have to have been within the first year or so of Thad's diagnosis.
  • Nausicaan piracy continued to plague Federation shipping lines. When the Federation Transport Union recommends its members refuse official shipments without Starfleet protection, deliveries throughout the Federation are disrupted. Federation President Kellessar zh'Tarash personally meets with the union's leadership, but the union refuses to budge over what it considers to be an essential safety issue -- too many ships and crews have been lost to the raiders. The President orders a recall of Starfleet vessels exploration and scientific missions to plug the gap, but many of those ships would take months to return. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Starfleet Command reluctantly agrees to pull back from the Klingon-Romulan border, and reassigns those vessels to patrol the shipping lanes. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Among many of the border colonies in Romulan space that had relied on Starfleet's protection, this is seen as yet another betrayal by the UFP. Admiral Taris uses this as a rallying cry to begin to unite the imperial remnants under one banner. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • With Starfleet gone from the border, Chancellor Martok agrees to attend Federation-mediated peace talks with the Gorn. The summit is held on Deep Space Station K-7 near the Sherman system, and Klingon, Gorn, and Nausicaan attend, along with the Federation's most celebrated diplomats. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Two days into the conference, an explosive device hidden in a serving cart is detonated, critically injuring Ambassador Zogozin of the Gorn Hegemony. The summit is disrupted as the Klingon, Gorn and Nausicaan delegations all prepare to depart, but are placed under lockdown by Starfleet Security, pending investigation.
  • Another 48 hours go by until a member of the Klingon delegation, J'dah, is found dead. He had been shot with a disruptor at close range, and then tossed out an airlock within hours of the explosion; his body was only discovered when it became caught on equipment on the station's hull. Research uncovers J'dah's ties to Klingon extremists opposed to Martok's rule and the Federation alliance, and forensic evidence proves him to be the one who planted the explosive. J'dah's journals indicate that it was the Federation delegation, not the Gorn, who were his intended targets, but the bomb apparently detonated prematurely. His killer is not found. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • After this incident, the peace talks break down beyond any hope of salvage. The Klingons press their advance into Gorn territory, and the Gorn pull back from their outlying colonies to protect their homeworld. King Slathis approaches the Letheans for support, but cannot come to an agreement due to the continued expense of their contract with the Nausicaans. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • With the "distraction" of the peace summit behind them, and in light of Starfleet's withdrawal from the Romulan border, hardliners on the Klingon High Council led by J'mpok push to resume the campaign in Romulan space. Chancellor Martok and his followers urge caution, preferring to concentrate on the Gorn front while continuing to build up the Klingon Defense Force to its pre-Dominion War levels. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Angered by Martok's refusal, Councilor J'mpok takes matters into his own hands, and gathers a fleet loyal to his House and those of his allies, and invades the Zeta Pictoris system. J'mpok's forces are met by a Romulan fleet commanded by Admiral Taris, and are soundly routed. The Klingon survivors report that the Romulans are using new, highly-advanced ship designs, but this cannot be confirmed. Martok orders Klingon Intelligence to investigate. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Despite the failure of the Zeta Pictoris campaign, it shows to the Great Houses that if Martok will not take decisive action, others will. The High Council begins to divide between those loyal to Martok and those who support new leadership, most of which rally behind J'mpok. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • For the Romulans, Taris' victory at Zeta Pictoris signals a turning point, a sign for those who were seeking the Empire's former glory. The government on Rator III proclaims Taris as the new Praetor, and is quickly joined by Achernar Prime and more than a dozen other worlds who up til now had been squabbling over their own claims towards leadership. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Taris is reluctant to accept the position, and says in an address broadcast throughout the Empire: "I am a military commander, and I would prefer to remain so. The seas of politics are rife with submerged hazards and hidden perils, and a wise person does well to avoid them. But my Empire calls and I cannot resist her plea." She calls on the colonial leaders and those at the head of the various factions to meet at Rator III, where they will select representatives for a new Romulan Senate, make plans to reorganize the government, and build a new capitol. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • A Federation operative undercover in Sela's exile fleet makes contact with their superiors, and reports that Sela and her followers have landed on Makar, an M-class in the Beta Quadrant, rich in decalithium and heavy metals. Within weeks, Sela and her forces subdue the native Iron Age population, and put them to work in the mines.(STO: The Path to 2409)
  • The operative also reports that Sela's ship picked up the signature of an artificial quantum singularity, as well as signs of a massive gravitational field; Sela dispatched two ships from the fleet to investigate these anomalies. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Castellan Garak of the Cardassian Union and Grand Nagus Rom of the Ferengi Alliance successfully conclude negotiations for Ferengi assistance in rebuilding Cardassian infrastructure and industry. Rom will provide the funding to rebuild factories, and design housing and industrial replicator facilities; the Ferengi will also return several jevonite artifacts sacred to the Oralians which had looted in the days after the Dominion War and came into Ferengi possession through the black market. The Cardassian Ministry of Culture considers this a strong act of friendship on the part of the Grand Nagus, though Rom is ridiculed for the entire deal among his own people. In return for these services, the Nagus and the Alliance receive exclusive trade agreements for Cardassian goods once the factories reopen. Despite the by-now-routine protests from certain corners of Ferenginar, the success of this deal proves to be one of the most lucrative arrangements in recent Ferengi history. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Acting on the reports from the USS Enterprise-E about potential incursions from Species 8472 close to Federation space, Starfleet Command assembles a task force to investigate. They begin by interviewing the Enterprise crew, as well as the former crew of the USS Voyager, the only Starfleet officers known to have definitive contact with the extra-dimensional species. (STO: The Path to 2409)
  • Starfleet Academy adopting considers new admissions standards that would make it easier for citizens of non-member worlds friendly to the Federation to enroll. "Not everyone knows a Starfleet captain who can give them a personal recommendation," says spokesperson Marie Durant, "that doesn't mean they wouldn't be fine officers." (STO: The Path to 2409)
