- January
- Starfleet introduces a new combadge, replacing the oval backpiece with a rectangle-and-oval-cutout design.
- 15 January (stardate 48038.5): The USS Voyager departs Earth Station McKinley under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway. (VOY: "Relativity")
- The USS Sally Ride is launched from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. (Shield of Tomorrow)
- March
- The Federation learns of the Dominion threat when the USS Defiant returns from the Gamma Quadrant with news of the Founders. (DS9: "The Search, Part II")
- The USS Equinox disappears, drawn to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. Shortly afterwards, she encounters the Krowtonan Guard, and within a week, over half her crew is killed. (VOY: "Equinox")
- April
- 26 April (stardate 48315.7-48317): The USS Voyager is lost in the Badlands, transported over 70,000 light years to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. It will be several years before Starfleet becomes aware of her fate. (VOY: "Caretaker")
- June
- 20 June (stardate 48467.3): Thomas Riker and the Maquis steal the USS Defiant from Deep Space 9, and expose a secret Cardassian military outpost in the Orias system. Riker is turned over to the Cardassians, and sentenced to life imprisonment at the labor camp on Lazon II. (DS9: "Defiant")
- July
- 31 July (stardate 48579.4): The USS Voyager discovers a micro-wormhole to the Alpha Quadrant, and makes contact with Romulan scientist Dr. Telek R'Mor in the year 2351. (VOY: "Eye of the Needle")
- August
- 15-16 August (stardate 48620.3-48622.5): The Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar launch a joint attack on the Founder homeworld in the Omarion Nebula. The assault fails, and both organizations suffer heavy losses. (DS9: "Improbable Cause", "The Die is Cast")
- 19-26 August (stardate 48632.4-48650): Lt. Commander Data incorporates the emotion chip created by his father in into his neural net. The Amargosa Observatory is attacked, and the Amargosa star is destroyed by a trilithium-based weapon. Investigating the incident, the USS Enterprise-D is destroyed at Veridian III. Captain Jean-Luc Picard retrieves retired Captain James T. Kirk from the nexus in order to stop Tolian Soran from destroying the Veridian star and annihilating the pre-warp inhabitants of Veridan IV. - The USS Intrepid responds to a distress call from the Salva Prime colony in the Demilitarized Zone, and finds every colonist dead, slaughtered by the Cardassians. (PDN: "The Good Fight")
- September
- Starfleet discovers that the Borg have assimilated Starbase 804 on the Federation's Core Frontier. (ST novel: The Return)
- October
- Shakaar Edon becomes First Minister of Bajor. (DS9: "Shakaar")
- Ben Bartholomew resigns his Starfleet commission and joins the Maquis. (PDN: "The Good Fight", "L'Morte d'Maquis")
- The USS Sally Ride responds to a distress call from the Akahrik system, and is ambushed by Capo Malgog of the Orion Syndicate. (Shield of Tomorrow: "Episode Zero")
- 31 October (stardate 48832.42): Captain Rafael Martinez and Commander Junil Rue of the Sally Ride log their reports on the Malgog incident. (Shield of Tomorrow: "Episode Zero" crew logs)
- December
- The USS Olympia crashes on an L-class planet in the Rutharian sector while returning from an eight-year mission of exploration in the Beta Quadrant. All hands are lost, including Captain Lisa Cusack. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")
