  • Following end of the USS Enterprise's five-year mission, a number of her crew are promoted and/or reassigned:
  • Captain James T. Kirk is promoted to Rear Admiral. At first, he acts as a special troubleshooter for the admiralty, then assumes the post of Chief of Starfleet Operations.(TOS novel: The Lost Years; Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
  • Commander Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy both retire from active duty. (TOS novel: The Lost Years; Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
  • Montgomery Scott is promoted to full Commander and remains aboard the Enterprise as Chief Engineer during the refit. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
  • Hikaru Sulu is promoted to Lieutenant Commander and takes a year-long assignment as a test pilot at the White Sands Flight Center. (TOS novel: Traitor Winds)
