• Following end of the USS Enterprise's five-year mission, a number of her crew are promoted and/or reassigned:

• Captain James T. Kirk is promoted to Rear Admiral. At first, he acts as a special troubleshooter for the admiralty, then assumes the post of Chief of Starfleet Operations.(TOS novel: The Lost Years; Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
• Commander Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy both retire from active duty. (TOS novel: The Lost Years; Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
• Montgomery Scott is promoted to full Commander and remains aboard the Enterprise as Chief Engineer during the refit. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
• Hikaru Sulu is promoted to Lieutenant Commander and takes a year-long assignment as a test pilot at the White Sands Flight Center. (TOS novel: Traitor Winds)
• Nyota Uhura is promoted to Lieutenant Commander and takes a post at Starfleet Academy, teaching special communications. (TOS novel: The Lost Years; TOS novel: Traitor Winds)
• Pavel Chekov is turned down for Starfleet Command School and instead goes into the Starfleet Security Academy for further training. Following an incident in which he was framed for murder, Chekov is promoted to Lieutenant. (TOS novel: Traitor Winds)
• Christine Chapel enters the doctoral program at Starfleet Medical Academy. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)
• Janice Rand transfers to Starfleet Communications, based out of their headquarters in Iceland. (TOS novel: Traitor Winds)
• Lieutenants Arex and M'Ress are reassigned.

• At the request of Admiral Kirk, Kevin Riley is promoted to Lieutenant Commander and assigned as the admiral's aide at Starfleet Headquarters, leaving his teaching post at Starfleet Academy. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)
