Ships involved in the battle include the Marshall-class light cruisers USS Patton and USS Eisenhower, two older Icarus-class USS Endeavour and USS Yorkshire, along with a group of Baton Rouge-class starships that arrive as reinforcements. (TOS novel: Errand of Fury: Seeds of Rage; Federation: The First 150 Years)
Still unfinished, and without weapons systems, the USS Constitution rushes from spacedock to back up the ships already engaged in the fight. The Constitution's advanced engines and shields prove vital in defending the damaged ships from Klingon fire, allowing time for the Starfleet forces to regroup and drive the Klingons back.
